“Your All Holiness, Your Eminence, Dear Friends,

“We are gathered in the garden of our Patriarchate tonight in order to say farewell to our honourable friends Mr. Thomas Antoine, Mr. David Arnett and Ms. Amira Arnon, the Consuls General of Belgium, the United States and Israel, respectively.

“In the Epistle of Barnabas, dated 130 A.D., we read, “Do not live entirely isolated, having retreated into yourselves, as if you were already justified, but gather instead to seek the common good together.”

“Barnabas means, of course, that we are called to serve our families, our communities, our nations and the human race in general. This service of the common good ought to be the mobilizing principle behind human existence.

“Political currents and certain celebrated social icons in our days may be propagating individualism and isolationism, but this doesn’t mean that they are always right. The individual cannot be the measure of all things. The world today is not only inhabited by holy monks who would teach that freedom is found in asceticism and solitude. And how profound is the concept of a freedom which is sometimes sought in retreating into little enclaves and struggling to protect “us” against “them”. No matter what the political label or feigned justification, that would only ensure the direction for more division and more despair amongst human beings.

“We believe that all human beings are bound to one another by an obligation of solidarity. You remember, of course, how, thousands of years ago, Cain set upon his brother Abel and killed him. The Almighty asked Cain, “Where is your brother Abel?” Cain replied, “Am I my brother’s keeper?” Cain did not receive an answer to his nonsensical question.  He was punished by a great curse and he confessed, “My punishment is greater than I can bear!” (Genesis 4:8-16).  At this very moment, is it possible that the Almighty is asking us, modern, educated and responsible people, where our brothers and Sisters are, for instance, the starving people of Niger, or street children, or refugees seeking a place of sojourn? Can we really escape from or procrastinate in our duty to one another, and most especially to the poor and starving wherever they are in the world? Don’t we all have a duty to participate in the social order and find a way to build a just society with all men and women, even those who are different from us or even with those we do not agree with?

“If what we call The Common Good is the sum total of conditions which allow people, either as groups or as individuals, to reach their natural fulfilment, then it is only natural that it is humankind’s common concern which calls for prudence especially from political, gubernatorial, academic and religious authorities, intellectuals and communicators.

“Respect for the fundamental and inalienable rights of the human person, the social well-being and the sustainable development of groups, the establishment of peace which is the stability and security of a just order, are all presupposed by the concept of The Common Good. It is the duty of all human beings, to promote and to defend the idea of the Common Good of civil societies and their citizens.

“Human interdependence, today, implies a Universal Common Good which calls the international community to organize itself in order to alleviate the miseries of people living in different corners of our globe, to promote mutual understanding between all faiths and cultures, to work towards the creation of conditions for a sustainable and just world peace.

“And this is exactly where we appreciate the personal efforts of these our three friends who have tried their best to achieve these ideals and have given exemplary service, not only representing the mission of their respective governments in this ancient city of ours, but have been personally involved in the life of the metropolitan community of Istanbul, actively participating not only in political or social affairs, but also in works of charity, displaying perfect examples of profound interest and fellowship with the people of Istanbul. We are all fortunate to have them with us during their tenure in this city, and, of course, sad, because they are leaving.

“On a personal note, how is it possible to forget our discussions on matters of faith and philosophy with Thomas who has taken a real and personal interest in the people of our country, and I am sure that he will continue to do so in his new responsible position in Brussels, for he will continue to cover Turkey there. David and Vivi have been such a dear couple, celebrities in the consular corps of Istanbul, and always radiating the values and virtues that forge their charming characters. They had also the difficult matter of resettling in the new consulate in ?stinye, at a time when tensions were mounting in the region, which happily did not daunt their personal contributions to the life of our city. I cannot forget my first encounter with Amira, years ago, when she gave me a beautiful icon of the Virgin Mary, made in Bethlehem, and I thought, “What a different consul general!” She really proved to be different. All of us, here in Istanbul, lived quite difficult days because of fanatical terror, especially the attacks at the central synagogue, after which Amira had to live in under hightened security measures. But nevertheless, there she was visible almost everywhere, serving the needs of the street children, paying visits to the Romano community, engaging in so many friendships.
“We are truly fortunate to have had, in Istanbul, these our dear friends with us, to whom we wish happines and health and the abundant blessings of God.

“Thomas, David, Vivi, Amira, we entrust you all to the care of God; you will always have open hearts and doors here in Istanbul! The Lord be with you!”
